My 3D printed pipe research started at Goldsmiths University, London in 2019. I accidentally entered the 3D printing / design department and refused to leave, seduced by the smell of molten plastic and repetitive sounds of the 3D printing machines. Since then I have developed instruments inspired by medieval shawms, double recorders, whistles and ocarinas. I use 3D modelling CAD software but also work with meshes. The pipes I make are often equipped with double reeds, found today in oboes and bassoons. This technology also invites experiments with microtonality, as prototyping and testing unorthodox tunings becomes fast. The pipes can also point to speculative cultures, imaginary music. These hybrids link the past with the future. For more information, sound examples and hard cash transactions please visit The Pipe Shoppe.
